Week 1- Intro to Design (Getting Ready to Get Started) … Slides on Trees, Ground Covers and Vines. Homework- Pictures of existing landscape and sun-track. Gardener profiles will be due Week 2.

Week 2- Micro Climates and Companion Planting… Slides on Perennials, Annuals and Herbs. Homework- Finish sun-tracks. Try to get survey plats ordered or if you are working on a smaller area, or without a plat, know your approximate square footage by Week 3. 

Week 3- All About Roses (Best For Our Area -  Best For Your Needs)…
Pruning, growing and care of your roses. The importance of good drainage, watering systems and gutters. Slides on roses and drainage. Homework- Site assessment for problem areas will be due week 4 for discussion.

Week 4- Organic procedures, Composting and Planting Techniques…
Adding structure to your design- Arbors, pathways, walls and garden whimsy. Slides on organic processes and garden structure. Homework- Site assessment for structure will be due Week 5 for discussion.

Week 5- Garden Tour-Container Gardening-Theme Gardens-Garden Rooms… Slides on container gardening and theme gardening. Homework- If you haven't already started putting your design down on paper- get started. Bring a list of problems that you are stuck on in your design (if you know any) to Week 6.

Week 6- Pest and Disease: ID and Control… Slides on insects and disease. Board work on problems in class. More design techniques to inspire you along the way. Homework- Bring your list of concerns to class on week 7 for discussion.

Week 7- How To Use Your New-Found Knowledge To Meet Your Needs & Expectations… Hitting all the points- seasonal interest, companion planting, landscape uses and site requirements. Slides on seasonal bloom, more companion planting and review on structure. Homework- If you are struggling with a problem, call me before (but, please not on the day of) the class so I can get you back on track.

Week 8- Garden Tour-Review-Best of the Best-Putting It All Together…
Slides on the best of everything we've studied to help fill in the spaces. Homework- Call to set your appointment for a one on one critique of your design.

If there are enough students that want to take a field trip and actually visit some of my existing designs, then we can schedule a Saturday field trip as well.
